Four Fact About HIV You Might Not Know But You Should

Contracting HIV is no longer seen as a death sentence. People with this condition can lead normal, fulfilled, active and happy lives. Even HIV dating is nothing unusual these days. Although most people are familiar with the virus, not many know these facts.

HIV in disguise

The first symptoms of HIV occur within a month of infection. The problem is that most people have no idea they are infected with it because they think they’ve just caught the flu. It’s no wonder why, first symptoms of HIV include fever, swollen glands, sore throat, headache, fatigue and other flu-like symptoms.  Every person who develops these symptoms and has recently had unprotected sex should get an HIV test.

Treatment makes all the difference

It is always smart to get tested on time because early treatment makes a difference. People can’t get cured, but if the virus is caught and treated on time, they can still lead a long, healthy and productive life. Early treatment saves the immune system. Individuals who receive it are less likely to transmit the virus to others.

Risky business

You probably know that the virus is only transmitted through blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk.  Some sexual acts are more likely to transmit HIV. Anal sex is one of them. It can also be passed through vaginal sex. The least risky is oral sex. It can even be transmitted through kissing if both partners have open sores or bleeding gums.

Prevention is crucial

Although the medicine has evolved and people with HIV can lead long and productive lives it is absolutely necessary to stay protected. Abstinence is the obvious way to protect yourself. But we are only humans so we will move on to the next step which is safe sex. There isn’t a protection which is 100 percent effective, but condoms, female condoms, and dental dams are the next best thing. Latex condoms are cheap and you can buy them almost anywhere. They also prevent transmission of STDs so make sure you always use them. Lube is not only for kinky sex games. This useful thing can stop condoms for breaking. When you are buying lube at your pharmacy make sure it doesn’t contain spermicide nonoxynol-9. This ingredient can irritate the vagina and anus and cause microtears.
